Interview With Producer Jemery Bolt about creatures, Jill Valentine, and the franchise.
ShockTillYouDrop.com: Are the zombie dogs going to be CG in the movie?
Jeremy Bolt: A combination of CG and then real Dobermans. We have real Dobermans covered in makeup. Then, we do a CG take over. Their head will literally explode – will flair open, the jaws will come here and this is very much part of the new game, Resident Evil 5. We were very, very impressed with the Resident Evil 5 game. It's probably the best game since the first game. It's been a massive success. I think apart from being pretty grotesque, it's a piece of art as well. This is the interior of the Arcadia. It's an Umbrella Laboratory and [you're looking at] one of the final scenes of the film. It's the scene of the final confrontation between Chairman Wesker and Alice, Milla Jovovich's character. Chairman Wesker is the most popular character in the videogame series. He was a good guy, he turned bad guy. He's played by this very strong Canadian actor, Shawn Roberts. We think he's awesome. He wears this long leather coat, it's very Matrix inspired, there's these dark glasses. He's a really worthy villain of Alice. He's probably the most worthy of all the villains she's come up against. Within those pods at the back, the Umbrella Corporation has been experimenting on people. Then Claire Redfield and Chris Redfield will also be involved in this attack and there will be zombie dogs who will open up as you saw.
Shock: On these tables?
Bolt: These are people that the Umbrella Corporation has been working on. Essentially, Wesker is trying to empower himself by experimenting on other bodies. He's obsessed with becoming as powerful as Alice. You know, Alice and the T-Virus have meshed and that's what he wants. It's very Kubrickian, this set, deliberately it's in real contrast to the rest of the movie. There are quite a few looks to this film. You know, we try as filmmakers with every one of the movies to give the audience a very different feel. The last one obviously was the desert, the previous one was in the city, a lot of it at night. This one, we are in Japan. We are in Alaska. We are in Los Angeles and then we have the more typical high tech Umbrella environments like this one. But, we believe strongly that in order to keep a franchise going you have to make the audience feel they're going to get something new each time. Don't just give them the same thing as the last one with a bit more action.
Shock: And all too common.
Bolt: Yeah, it's really quite hard work because visually, I mean, for example at the moment you go to the cinema, there's so many post apocalyptic movies, and obviously we are slightly post apocalyptic, so we're trying to think of ways of being slightly different in a post apocalyptic world which is tough, especially when you don't have the budget of 2012.
Shock: How are the undead and the zombies different in this movie than in the previous ones?
Bolt: They're becoming a bit more intelligent. They also have mandibles, tentacles that come out of their mouths.
Shock: That's from the game too.
Bolt: Yeah, more intelligent, physically evolving and there was a character, one of them becomes quite a big character in this version of the film. As I said, we really looked at the last game, although it's set in Africa, we're not in Africa. We did take a lot of their characters from that game and worked them into this ‘cause we were very impressed with it.
Shock: Will we see Jill Valentine again?
Bolt: You might. [laughs]
Shock: Will it be the same actress?
Bolt: It might be. [laughs]
Shock: Is this envisioned as the final chapter in this?
Bolt: We try to make every one a satisfactory movie and if the movie does well enough and we feel there's a demand and Paul and I and my colleagues are creatively excited enough, we would do another one. I think that we try to view every one as it could be the last one. We're not presumptuous enough to think it will just keep going. But, one of the things that's pretty exciting is now we are working very closely with Capcom, so we have a very strong relationship and my dream is that I actually will make a version of this film that properly integrates a game and a movie, which has never been done to my knowledge. But I think we've showed them, we've brought things to their franchise, and obviously we've taken from their franchise and I think there's a good union, a creative union potentially there which I haven't fully explored. So that would be my goal in the future.

Potentially Spoilery Visual Effects interview?
Source: http://shocktilyoudrop.com/news/interviewsnews.php?id=14746 (spoilery stuff in the last paragraph)
There's a new interview with D. Eric Robertson regarding visual/creature effects. Towards the end of the interview there are some potential spoilers. He says they've upped the amount of creature effects, saying "The dogs, the Majini, and the undead, the burrowing undead, the underground undead have all kind of eclipsed their previous counterparts in complexity and frankly, just in the size and frame and how much we're featuring them, that's grown as well."
But then towards the end, he mentions a spoiler regarding one of the characters - Beware of potential (can never be 100% at this stage) spoilers below:
Q: We saw some of the dogs out there and what you guys are going to do in post. For the monster movie nuts out there, what's been the most fun creature to design or play with so far?
Robertson: You know, so far I'd say that Wesker and his eventual demise has been great. I mean, the undead and the dogs aren't part of the drama as much. I mean, they're certainly an integral part of the fear and the action, but those characters don't have as much input into the overall storytelling whereas Wesker's a character that we see over and over through the movie and, you know, he interacts quite closely with the cast. So anytime you do that and have a creature as part of the mix, it's been a lot of fun doing him.

*NEW* Interview with Director about 3D and actress Milla Jovovich
Here is a recent interview with MTV - There will likely be several more updates over the next few days due to RE's WonderCon presentation.
MTV: In 2002, your "Resident Evil" became a zombie classic and quite possibly the best video game movie ever made. Then you chose to write and produce 2004's "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and 2007's "Resident Evil: Extinction." Why did you feel that now was the time to return as director?
Paul W.S. Anderson: Well, "Resident Evil" is a franchise I'm hugely excited about and always have been. I regretted not directing the other ones; I always wanted to, but I had scheduling conflicts. This time around, I thought, "You know what? I miss directing 'Resident Evil,' I want to direct another movie, and I'm going to." So I made it happen.
MTV: What did you see as the biggest challenge this time around?
Anderson: Well, it's the fourth film, so what are you going to do that's fresh? How are you going to invigorate the franchise? How are you going to keep it alive? How are you going to keep the audience you already have and make that audience grow and reach out to new people? My intention was to make this like "T2" was to "The Terminator." It's the same franchise, but it's bigger and it's improved and it's making a large conceptual leap.
MTV: And 3-D is a big part of this leap?
Anderson: Absolutely, in terms of me coming back as a director, 3-D was a big part of that. "Avatar" was a big influence on us ... I can't tell you how beautiful the images look. The difference is "Avatar" is predominantly a 60 percent animated movie, and all I have is CG. But I can't tell you how beautiful this camera system makes movies look in 3-D, and how much depth you get. We have a whole fight scene with Milla and Ali in the rain with this character called the Executioner, which is this huge giant guy carrying this big ax. It's all in an indoor environment, but it's raining. The depth you get with the water and the rain is just fantastic — the images are just beautiful. The scene is beautiful and it's horrifying, it's action-packed. As a filmmaker, it's incredibly exciting.
MTV: You've worked with your lovely wife Milla on all these films, but this is the first "Resident Evil" you've shot since she gave birth to your daughter. Now that she's a mom, was Milla less eager to do some of the more hard-core stunts?
Anderson: No, it was the other way around, in fact. I have to keep her away from dangerous things on the movie set, because she'll do absolutely anything and wants to do everything. There'll be times when I say, "Look, you just cannot do this."
MTV: Over the course of these movies, she's done some pretty insane stuff.
Anderson: There's no stopping her. She is fearless, and she is very committed. That's the great thing about Milla — she really commits to what she does, and that's why I think she is so good in these movies; she sells the reality of it. She's there, 150 percent. She believes in the characters, she's committed to the films and she wants to really deliver for the audience.
MTV: It must help you save a few bucks on stunt women.
Anderson: Well, she knows she can do it, and when you see her face doing it she delivers. She does it better than any stunt woman, that's for sure. All the stunt women we work with are great, and sometimes you do have to use stunt women because things are so dangerous that you would never want to put your leading actress in that position. You'd be irresponsible to do it. So yes, we have stunt women, but they mostly just sit around and watch Milla do it. She's an amazing, versatile actress.

The trailer may or may not be online slightly before or after that. I'll of course put it on the site when it's available.

Release date change
I'm a little late to add this depressing news, but it looks like Resident Evil: Afterlife will be delayed from the excellent August 27th date to January 2011. Word is that it is due to all the special effects and additional 3d effects. All fans are pretty sad I think, considering we were excited for an big 3d Resident Evil summer movie, but now it's knocked to over a year from now, to the winter...sadness sadness...of course, if anything changes with this date, i'll update immediately. but for now...looks like we'll be waiting longer for an RE movie.

Jill Valentine Returning to Resident Evil : Afterlife!
Last time we saw Jill, she was with Alice, Carlos, & Angie in RE:Apocalypse driving away from the Umbrella facility. We did not see her, nor was she mentioned in RE:Extinction. But now Milla Jovovich (Alice) has suggested (which is likely a confirmation otherwise she wouldn't mention it) that "Valentine MAY b back..." on her Twitter account.
We don't know for sure if Sienna Guillory will be playing her again - we can only hope.
updated: Sienna Guillory is now confirmed to be the only one considered for the return of Jill. So unless they're blowing smoke, expect Jill to return

Several New Pics, Monster Confirmed, Lots of other tidbits
There are several new pictures from the set available now - they are below as well - It looks to include characters Alice, Chris, and Claire - the fourth character I would guess to be Kmart, but it's not confirmed. The other info comes from Milla Jovovich on Twitter. Among the info, one important thing to note is a new monster has been confirmed, a monster from the Resident Evil 5 videogame - named Executioner (picture on the left). For all the actress's tweets (and she seems to be updating fairly regularly) use this link to follow - @MillaJovovich - But I will go ahead and point out the important ones that are story related in order of how they happened:
>> wow, just finished a scene with Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller on a skiff approaching the huge ship. to say its cold is a joke.
>> just wrapped and now off to stunt rehearsal to paractice my super back flying kick! its gonna be so incredible! i own it.
>> haha! 715 am and we just finished the spin kick, it's the sickest kick i've ever done! woohoo!
>> still floating on air after that excellent flying spin kick, i definitly think we've topped the other RE films with this one. like an arrow.
>> i have to have blood on my arm dripping from an open wound i get fighting Wesker and it literally froze
>> i fly a small aircraft in this film and they did a shot of it landing on the boat we're on the night before last and get this, all the people who live in the skyscrapers around the harbor phoned 911 reporting a plane crash on the ship! how rad! they got HUNDREDS of call!
>> so cool! paul just told us the dailys from the last few days look INCREDIBLE!!! (dailys is the latest footage that's been shot already). they were of the big action sequence with Alice and Claire fighting THE EXECUTIONER who in reality is an 8 ft. tall heavy weight boxer! he has a HUGE axe and we're in a prison shower, so everytime he swings the axe, showers explode! so thru the whole scene its literally raining! so beautiful!

New Synopsis, 2 New Actors
Two new actors, Kacey Barnfield (left pic) and Norman Yeung (right pic) join the cast. It's not known who their characters are. Also a new synopsis is here, lacking in Umbrella info, but i'm betting part of their role has to do with the "deadly trap" mentioned in the synopsis.
synopsis: In a world ravaged by a virus infection, turning its victims into the Undead, ALICE (Milla Jovovich), continues on her journey to find survivors and lead them to safety. Her deadly battle with the Umbrella Corporation reaches new heights, but Alice gets some unexpected help from an old friend. A new lead that promises a safe haven from the Undead leads them to Los Angeles, but when they arrive the city is overrun by thousands of Undead and Alice and her comrades are about to step into a deadly trap.

Spencer Locke returns as K-Mart! Wesker recasted with Shawn Roberts, another cast addition.
Spencer Locke is reported to be returning as K-Mart. Actor Shawn Roberts (middle picture) joins as the new Wesker. And actor Kim Coates (right picture) joins as a new character not yet named. In addition, director Paul W.S. Anderson suggested there will be some progression in Alice's mission against Umbrella, stating "Alice's battle with The Umbrella Corporation isn't finished. Last time we saw Alice, she let them know she was coming after them. It’s time to settle the score."

Claire confirmed to Return. Actor Wentworth Miller confirmed to play Chris (Claire's brother) - plot details also.
Actor Boris Kodjoe confirms other cast members - Ali Larter as Claire Redfield and Wentworth Miller (Prison Break) as Chris Redfield (Claire's brother).
source: http://www.blackfilm.com/20090924/features/residentevilcastingnews.shtml
This news also coincides with some rumored, but now confirmed plot details. The storyline will include scenes within an LA prison, where Chris and other survivors are hiding out. Alice and Claire will meet up there and help them escape. We do not yet know whether Claire has made it to Alaska and is now coming back to rescue her brother, or whether this is before she even gets to Alaska. Alice has an altercation with Wesker early in the movie, which will likely include her clones, but we do not know anything else about Umbrella or that storyline at this point.
The LA plotline and other info is below - Most likely this is for casting purposes mainly, because it only focuses on a few characters that are involved in the prison storyline - no character info on Umbrella. So most likely this is only a partial synopsis, but it is confirmed. Included in the info are two other new characters as well, Angel (tough latino male) and Crystal (20 year old former swimmer).

Milla Interviews confirms Alice clones return, discusses 3d, etc.
Milla Jovovich confirmed again she's starring in the new movie. She also suggests that the clones will play a significant role, talks about the film being in 3d, and general stuff about her career. Here are quotes from the article:
source: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/16947
"I’m the lead role [again]," says Jovovich. "There’s the clones and it’s going to be a lot of work. I’m gonna be working every day for the next four months on this and it’s gonna be bigger than ever. It’s super-exciting."
"I would feel a little bit weird giving you too much information about the character," she tells BD. "Let’s just say this. The clones are definitely in it. You’ve got multiple Alice’s kicking serious butt. And definitely the real Alice has some pretty major things happen to her that change the stakes a little bit. That’s probably all I can give you in a vague sort of way. It’s definitely going to be a different Alice than who we’re used to."
I have no idea about the 3-D process," Jovovich says, laughing. "Paul just signed a deal with the people Cameron used on AVATAR because they impressed him the most. [Paul] has basically seen like every 3-D movie ever made in the last two months to prepare for it. We’re definitely using all the best equipment. All the storyboards are centered around how to make the 3-D the best it can be. We’re really trying to use that medium to its fullest."
"You know what, every two years I get a steady job and as an actor [and] that’s a huge relief. Then I get to do all my little independent movies that no one sees. I get more versatile things for myself. And then, every couple years you get the RESIDENT EVIL to kick your butt and get you in shape and it’s fun and exciting."

Resident Evil 4 will be in 3d - New Trilogy of Movies planned
Surprising news out of nowhere. Word is Resident Evil 4 will be shooting in 3d, using same camera system as December's Avatar. In addition, Paul is envisioning a new trilogy of Resident Evil movies. Not sure what to think about that, but it is a whopper of news. Also, he suggests the possible "unexpected return" of characters from the earlier movies - likely candidates are Jill Valentine and Angie Ashford - but of course, he doesn't specify so we can't say for sure.
